Dance is a very important aspect of many cultures, symbolic of a rich history and preservation of one’s heritage. From their traditional costumes to intricate movements and facial expressions, there is no limit to what cultural dances can be, making them just as creative as they are culturally significant. Being a part of a cultural dance group or trying cultural dances with friends brings countless benefits that will enrich your day-to-day life.

Participating in an ethnic style of dance can improve social connections with others. By learning and engaging in the dance, a community is created, full of people who love and take pride in their familial customs. A great way to start doing traditional dances is to reach out to local organizations, dance programs, and even people you may come across at family gatherings or parties.

Additionally, cultural dances are a great outlet to express oneself and maybe discover a new interest. Many of us have busy lives—from school, work, and other responsibilities— so dance can be a way to free our minds from our routines and practice movement in an imaginative, freeing, sense. You may even realize, after trying out cultural dance, that it is something you would like to do in the future and in a long-term sense, making it an integral part of your journey through life.

Having cultural dance as an activity is very beneficial, as it brings positivity and self-reflection components into one’s life, deepening roots with ethnic traditions and communities. Even just pursuing cultural dance once in a while can transform relations with family and friends, which in return affects the world around them.
