ISSD Alumni Corner, Kimia Jalali<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

The Iranian School of San Diego boasts a significant history, having been in operation since 1988, and has positively impacted numerous students and families over the years. The school takes pride in its extensive alumni network, consisting of successful individuals who have made notable contributions to both the Iranian American and global communities. Many alumni now have children enrolled at ISSD, establishing a strong multi-generational bond with the school. In an effort to showcase these accomplishments and underline the value of ISSD, <\/b>Peyk<\/i><\/b> is highlighting profiles detailing the lives and experiences of the school’s graduates. We are reaching out to select ISSD alumni with a series of questions to not only check on their well-being, but also to introduce them to current students and parents. These alumni could potentially serve as significant role models for the present and upcoming student body. Our guest in this issue is Kimia Jalali, MHA, Regional Consultant for Southern California at Kaiser Permanente, and Dance Instructor at ISSD<\/b><\/p>\n

Kimia Jalali, <\/b><\/span>MHA, Regional Consultant for Southern California at Kaiser Permanente, and Dance Instructor at ISSD<\/b><\/span>During which years did you attend ISSD, and for how long?<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

I began attending ISSD around 2001, when I was about five years old, and it has remained a constant in my life ever since. This year marks over two decades of being part of this community. What began as weekend classes gradually became something far more meaningful, and today I have come full circle, returning not only as a former student, but as a teacher.<\/p>\n

Can you share any fond memories or amusing anecdotes from your time at ISSD?<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

One of my earliest memories is from my first day. I was five years old, holding my mother\u2019s hand as she walked me into the classroom. I did not yet understand the significance of that moment, but it marked the beginning of something that would shape so much of my life.<\/p>\n

Through ISSD, I learned to read and write in Farsi, and I still remember the pride I felt the first time I could read a message from family in Iran on my own. During summer visits, being able to write something down for my cousins or communicate more directly with family felt deeply meaningful.<\/p>\n

My mom also brought me into dance at ISSD, which became one of the most defining parts of my experience. Under the guidance of Hengameh Ayari, I learned to appreciate dance not simply as movement, but as an expression of music, history, and cultural identity. Through different regional styles, I was introduced to the richness and diversity of Iranian culture in a way that felt both creative and deeply personal.<\/p>\n

Nowruz has always held a special place in my heart and remains my favorite holiday to this day. It was never just a celebration. It was something we worked toward all year long. We spent months preparing for performances, attending extra rehearsals, and building toward that moment on stage. That anticipation made Nowruz feel especially meaningful. I also remember participating in art competitions, drawing haft-seen, and feeling so excited when our artwork was scanned and included in the yearbook.<\/p>\n

Over time, I had the opportunity to perform not only within the school, but also in cultural and academic spaces throughout San Diego. Later, I began bringing my own creative visions to life through dance, shaping performances that honored traditional styles while introducing new interpretations. Seeing those ideas come to life was incredibly rewarding.<\/p>\n

Equally lasting were the friendships formed along the way. Many of the people I met during those years remain some of my closest friends today.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Are you still in contact with fellow students, teachers, or staff from ISSD?<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Yes, very much so. Many of the friendships I formed through ISSD have remained an important part of my life, and some of the people I met there are still among my closest friends today.<\/p>\n

What made ISSD so special is that it extended beyond the classroom. It created a real sense of community for our families as well, and those relationships grew into something lasting. It is also meaningful to me that some of the teachers and leaders who shaped that environment are still part of the school today. There is something very special about growing up in a place and then, years later, standing in it again as an adult and still feeling that continuity.<\/p>\n

In what ways has your education at ISSD influenced your relationship with your extended family and cultural heritage?<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

My parents gave me my first foundation in Farsi, and I am deeply grateful to them for making the intentional decision to bring my brother and me to ISSD. What the school gave me was another layer, one that allowed me to deepen that foundation through language, dance, tradition, and community.<\/p>\n

Growing up in the diaspora, that kind of experience is incredibly meaningful. At the time, I did not realize how rare it was. As I have gotten older and met more people with different experiences of growing up outside of Iran, I have come to understand just how special this was.<\/p>\n

ISSD allowed me to experience my culture in a way that felt lived and joyful. It made traditions tangible, language expressive, and identity something I could feel grounded in rather than distant from. It strengthened my relationship to my family, to my heritage, and to myself. It gave me a sense of belonging that I carry with me to this day.<\/p>\n

What are your current endeavors in terms of career, family life, and volunteering?<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

I studied Public Health at UC Irvine and later pursued my Master\u2019s in Health Administration at the University of Southern California, graduating in 2023. I now work in healthcare as a regional consultant for Kaiser Permanente, supporting operations across multiple hospitals.<\/p>\n

I currently live in Los Angeles, and every Sunday, I make the drive to San Diego to teach dance at the Iranian School of San Diego.<\/p>\n

Over the past decade, I have been giving back to this community as a dance teacher at the Persian Dance Academy at ISSD, working with students as young as five years old.<\/p>\n

This role is deeply meaningful to me. I have the opportunity to not only teach, but to create, to bring my artistic visions to life, and to continue honoring traditional Persian dance in ways that feel both authentic and evolving. I am constantly looking for ways to grow the program and elevate the experience for my students.<\/p>\n

More importantly, I aim to empower my students to feel confident in their identity, to take pride in their culture, and to express that through movement. Each year, especially during Nowruz, I get to watch their dedication and hard work come to life on stage. Being part of that process is something I do not take for granted.<\/p>\n

What are your aspirations for the future of ISSD, and what advice would you offer to families with children at ISSD or considering enrollment in the future?<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

I hope ISSD continues to grow as a space where culture is not only taught, but truly experienced. I hope future generations continue to have a place where they can build a meaningful connection to their language, traditions, arts, and identity.<\/p>\n

With the continued support of the community, I hope the school keeps expanding so that more children have access to this kind of experience. What makes ISSD so special is that each student receives something personal from it, while still being part of a shared cultural foundation.<\/p>\n

For families, I would say that what may seem small in the moment often becomes something much more lasting over time. These experiences shape how children understand themselves, where they come from, and how they carry that forward.<\/p>\n

Anything else you want to add?<\/i><\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

ISSD has been more than a school in my life. It has been a community, a source of belonging, and a place that helped shape me in lasting ways.It is where I built lifelong friendships, where my family found connection, and where I learned to carry my identity with pride. Especially in moments when distance from extended family or homeland felt more present, ISSD was something steady and grounding. I feel deeply grateful for what this community has given me, and I am proud to now be part of carrying it forward.<\/p>\n

As I continue to grow in my own life, I hope to one day bring my own children, alongside the children of the friends I grew up with, back into this same community so they can experience that same sense of belonging in their own way.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
