Our little Iran, in this corner of the world, was not spared from these upheavals either. Nowruz celebrations and ceremonies were held in a limited manner with fewer participants. At the beginning of all these events, the organizers declared a minute of silence in honor of the victims of the events of January and the war. Gatherings for Sizdahbedar and Chaharshanbeh Suri did not take place at all.

In today’s turbulent society, it’s hard to have a moment free from thoughts about Iran, its future, and its past. As I write these lines, over a month has passed since the war began. I do not know what stage we will be at by the time these words reach you. I do not want to recount events, but I want to talk to you about the polarization of society and the fate of our children. Polarization has never existed to this extent. I do not know why this happened or how to get out of it. Although I am concerned about the adults in society, my primary worry is for the children. The greatest harm from war always falls on children. The current situation and the polarization in society can amplify this harm. War always brings death, destruction, homelessness, and disease, but the wounds it leaves on the souls of children—if they survive—will remain for years. The current war is no exception.

How can we explain to children that at ten o’clock in the morning, a missile is launched from a ship and lands in a girls’ school in Minab, shaking the world? Destruction, blood, screams, and wails fill the air. Then, when adults rush to help and try to rescue people, a second missile destroys everything. The fact that a mistake occurred and it was not intentional, resulting in the deaths of 168 school children and their teachers, does not alleviate the pain. How can this reality be explained and justified? Then, adults begin to discuss whether the missile was fired from a particular direction and should be recorded as a crime, but if it was fired from another direction, it’s merely collateral damage, and of course, war has casualties! Thus, for some, it does not matter that 168 children have perished; what matters is who fired the missile.

For the children of Iran, who experience it day and night with their own flesh and blood, war is distinctly different. Seeing destroyed homes, people trapped under rubble, small coffins, sleepless nights, and days filled with worries about where might be targeted next, becomes part of their lives. Regardless of who is victorious or defeated in war, the damage is so horrific that it will linger for generations.

In the past two or three years, we have faced phenomena we thought could not resurface. The most significant of these is the “normalization of violence.” Killing innocent people no longer holds the stigma it once did. Genocide has become a norm and is visible live on television and social media. The daily killing of tens of thousands, including countless children and women, has become mundane and is treated as insignificant news. The destruction of buildings and the razing of cities no longer attract anyone’s attention; mentioning them may even bring about comprehensive pressures and unpleasant consequences for individuals.

In Lebanon, Palestine, Yemen, Syria, and Sudan, thousands of innocent, unarmed, and starving people perish every day. Now, Iran is added to this group. For ordinary Americans, the existence or absence of freedom, inflation, hunger, and slaughter in these countries may not hold much significance; what matters is how this slaughter affects their lives. Will gasoline become more expensive? Will inflation rise? What impact will these killings have on my wallet?

In Peyk, because of our non-political status, we cannot take a political stance, but we can engage in discussions about general issues like human rights, war, peace, and the environment, which are ingrained cultural phenomena in society. Currently, all these issues are being addressed in Iran. The war that has cast its shadow over Iran for forty-seven years has finally occurred.

Without a doubt, war is the worst phenomenon humans have created. War is worse than any natural disaster. It encompasses earthquakes, floods, fire, hunger, homelessness, violations of human rights, and oppression. Nothing good ever comes from war. The scars of war remain on people for years and generations. While many of our fellow compatriots may currently view this war as liberating and support it, the history of our country shows that even if dictatorial regimes come to an end, such countries are pushed back for decades and likely end up with an even worse government than before. Most probably, just as the Iraq war solidified the Islamic Republic, this war could yield the same result and push the popular movement back for years. Moreover, the destruction of infrastructure will plunge people into prolonged poverty and misery.

Regarding the children of Iran and the effects of war, there is little we can do. For Iranian American children who are facing domestic, emotional, and communal conflicts, we should be very careful. I believe we should try to keep them as far removed from this chaos as possible. They hear the news and pick up on information from their friends, so questions are sure to arise. It is essential to respond to their inquiries calmly and without emotional interference. Depending on the child’s age and understanding, we can address various aspects of their questions. We must remember that children are intelligent and have easy access to information. If we answer their questions based on emotion and bias, when the truth comes to light, we might damage our credibility with them. Moreover, we should always keep in mind that these children are the future builders of our tomorrow, and it is our duty to give them hope and promise a better future.

In these circumstances, if each of us can take even a small step to preserve the mental health and growth of our future generations, perhaps one day we can move towards a joyful and peaceful future.

War and Children Ali Sadr This year’s Nowruz was one of the strangest, most turbulent, and saddest that I can remember.
