A growing body of medical research confirms that social connection is not merely a comfort. It is a biological necessity, and its absence is a serious health risk.

Isolation Is As Dangerous As Smoking

In 2010, researchers combined data from 148 studies involving over 308,000 people and found that individuals with strong social relationships had a 50 percent greater likelihood of survival over any given follow-up period. [1] A separate U.S. national study confirmed that social isolation predicts death at rates comparable to smoking, obesity, and high blood pressure. [2] These findings were so alarming that in 2023, the U.S. Surgeon General declared loneliness and social isolation a public health epidemic. [3] Today, roughly 37 percent of American adults report moderate to severe loneliness. [4]

The Heart Knows

The American Heart Association now formally recognizes social isolation and loneliness as risk factors for cardiovascular and brain health. [5] Isolated individuals face a 33 percent higher risk of dying from any cause and a 28 percent higher risk of dying from heart disease specifically. [6] The mechanisms are not mysterious: chronic loneliness keeps the body’s stress response activated, raises inflammation, and weakens the immune system over time. [7, 8]

Immunity and the Mind

The immune system responds to social life in two distinct ways. Social isolation triggers increased inflammation—useful in the short term but destructive when chronic—while regular social contact strengthens antiviral defenses. [7] A meta-analysis of 56 clinical trials found that psychosocial interventions produced meaningful improvements in immune function. [9] Meanwhile, a 2026 study of nearly 446,000 people found that loneliness more than doubled the risk of developing depression and was linked to higher rates of anxiety. [10]

Why This Matters for Iranian Americans

Research involving Farsi-speaking immigrants paints a sobering picture. A 2025 study found that over 25 percent reported clinically significant anxiety and over 26 percent reported major depression, rates considerably higher than the general population. [11] Shorter time in the host country, limited English proficiency, and active job-seeking were key risk factors. [11] Scholars consistently find that community belonging helps immigrants navigate a new culture, access resources, and maintain identity—and that losing that collective support makes individuals more vulnerable to both physical and emotional illness. [12]

It Is Not Just About Showing Up

Here is where the science gets personal; simply being around people is not enough. Relationships must be meaningful—characterized by mutual trust, responsiveness, and genuine care—to impart health benefits. Low-quality relationships, marked by superficiality or conflict, can actually have negative effects on physical health. [13] The effects of relationship quality on mortality are roughly equivalent to those of smoking and greater than those of obesity or physical inactivity. [13] A study using audio recordings of everyday conversations found that meaningful, substantive interactions—not just more frequent ones—were associated with greater well-being and feelings of social connectedness. [14]

This is an important distinction. It is possible to feel lonely in a crowded room. The American Heart Association notes that individuals with many social contacts may still experience loneliness, and that social isolation and loneliness operate through different pathways. [5] What heals is not the gathering itself, but the quality of connection within it, i.e., the conversation that moves beyond pleasantries into something real, the moment when someone truly listens.

The Healing Power of Culture and Spirit

Persian culture offers something uniquely suited to this need. The tradition of sharing poetry—reading Rumi, Hafez, or Saadi together—is not merely an aesthetic pleasure. A systematic review and meta-analysis found that poetry-based interventions produced significant reductions in depression, anxiety, and stress, with effect sizes in the moderate-to-large range. [5] Shared cultural and artistic activities foster what researchers call “connectedness and belonging” and “collective meaning,” the sense that we are part of something larger than ourselves. [15]

For those who draw strength from faith or spirituality, the evidence is encouraging. A landmark study published in JAMA found that spiritual community engagement was consistently associated with lower mortality, fewer depressive symptoms, and reduced suicide risk. [16] A 2025 study of more than 180,000 individuals across 22 countries found that feeling loved by a higher power buffered the negative health effects of loneliness and social isolation. [17] Spirituality, in its many forms, appears to offer a sense of connection that extends beyond the human circle.

The Prescription

An international panel of experts recently published public health guidelines for social connection, recommending that individuals make connections a lifelong priority, build diverse networks, and—crucially—prioritize meaningful interactions over superficial ones. [18] Group-based interventions, including therapy, psychoeducation, and community activities, are the most effective approaches for reducing both loneliness and social isolation. [19]

The evidence delivers a clear message: the Persian instinct toward togetherness—the mehmoonis, the Nowruz gatherings, the phone calls to family abroad, the evenings spent reading poetry together—is not just tradition. It is preventive medicine. But the prescription comes with a note: it is the richness of connection that matters most. A gathering where someone shares a verse of Rumi that moves the room to silence, where a friend asks how you are truly doing and waits for the honest answer, where laughter comes from a place of real knowing, that is the kind of togetherness that heals.

In a culture that has always understood the value of being together, science has finally caught up. The invitation now is to go deeper.

References

Holt-Lunstad J, Smith TB, Layton JB.
