{"id":1684,"date":"2019-11-13T18:26:03","date_gmt":"2019-11-13T18:26:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/peykmagazine.com\/en\/?p=1684"},"modified":"2019-11-13T18:34:21","modified_gmt":"2019-11-13T18:34:21","slug":"are-we-media-saturated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/peykmagazine.com\/en\/2019\/11\/13\/are-we-media-saturated\/","title":{"rendered":"Are We Media-Saturated?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p2\">Once in a while, I go back and review some of my editorials and I bring out something from the past that needs today\u2019s attention.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The following was first published in 2009 and is still very relevant today:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">It is undeniable that we live in the information age.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It has been said that the amount of information doubles every five years, though I think this statement was made before Facebook, Twitter, etc.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The information in the daily edition of the New York Times is supposedly more than an individual man or woman in the sixteenth century would receive during their entire lives.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This does not include all the information from television, film, computers, phone, fax, magazines, etc.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As someone put it best: \u201cExplosion is an Understatement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Do we really think that because we are getting more information, there is more knowledge?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We need to keep abreast of and often lack the skills to read the images.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The MEDIA-DOMINATED WORLD WE LIVE IN, AND THE ONE OUR CHILDREN ARE GROWING UP IN, POSES SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGES.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\">Many of us often and quickly condemn an inappropriate television program, but do we ever contact a broadcasting organization to praise an illuminating documentary or a well-written and well-acted program?<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p2\">We have been compared to fish in water, often failing to notice the flood of images that washes over us daily.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This should not mean that our relationship with what we hear or see should be passive.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However, how often do we challenge, question, support, or reinforce what we see or hear?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Many of us often and quickly condemn an inappropriate television program, but do we ever contact a broadcasting organization to praise an illuminating documentary or a well-written and well-acted program?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The \u201cbuy into\u201d gimmick is strongly projected through pictures, images, and ideas and all are made up by writers, photographers, artists, and editors.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Easily, one could understand the representation as the reality.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>But then, how does our youth differentiate between the actual reality and the media version of reality?<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">All that we see or hear plays with and influences our emotions and imaginations. Why? Remember that the media are businesses with commercial interests, and all those on the businesses\u2019 payrolls work for the final \u201cinterests.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Finally, should the media be more responsible?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Of course, they should.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However, it is more important to realize that <span class=\"s1\">who \u201cwe\u201d are determines the media\u2019s meaning to us<\/span>.
