Thursday, March 23, 2023     6:00pm – 8:00pm

Award-winning journalist, educator, and UC Berkeley professor Shereen Marisol Meraji delivers the 2nd Annual Clara Breed Civil Liberties Lecture, named after heroic former San Diego Public Library director Clara E. Breed. Meraji is a founder and co-creator of Code Switch, NPR’s critically acclaimed and high-charting podcast covering race, culture and identity. During her 8 year tenure with Code Switch where she was both co-host and senior producer, the show won numerous awards and was named “show of the year” by Apple Podcasts in 2020. Growing up in an Iranian-American and Puerto Rican home where no one spoke in hushed tones, the rhythms and cadences of life have inspired her story pitches, storytelling style, and reportage. As a producer, reporter, and host working with sound for over 20 years, Meraji has told stories of underrepresented communities while fighting for equity and inclusion in journalism. The Clara Breed Civil Liberties Lecture honors Miss Breed’s triple legacy of service, decency, and advocacy on behalf of Japanese Americans wrongly imprisoned in concentration camps by the federal government during World War II.
