The Iranian School of San Diego boasts a significant history, having been in operation since 1988, and has positively impacted numerous students and families over the years. The school takes pride in its extensive alumni network, consisting of successful individuals who have made notable contributions to both the Iranian American and global communities. Many alumni now have children enrolled at ISSD, establishing a strong multi-generational bond with the school. In an effort to showcase these accomplishments and underline the value of ISSD, Peyk is highlighting profiles detailing the lives and experiences of the school’s graduates. We are reaching out to select ISSD alumni with a series of questions to not only check on their well-being, but also to introduce them to current students and parents. These alumni could potentially serve as significant role models for the present and upcoming student body. Our guest in this issue is Pareesa Haririan, D.O., M.P.H.

During which years did you attend ISSD, and for how long?
I attended ISSD from 2006 to 2012!
Can you share any fond memories or amusing anecdotes from your time at ISSD?
Some of my favorite memories at ISSD were the times we prepared for Nowruz and end-of-year performances. I still remember spending hours rehearsing dances with my friends, laughing over small mistakes, and feeling that mix of excitement and stage fright right before we went on. Those experiences not only built my confidence but also sparked my love for theater and performing arts. Looking back, those weekends at ISSD were full of laughter, creativity, and community—a time when learning about my culture felt joyful and alive.
Are you still in contact with fellow students, teachers, or staff from ISSD?
Yes, I am still in contact with some of the friends I made at ISSD!
In what ways has your education at ISSD influenced your relationship with your extended family and cultural heritage?
My education at ISSD deeply strengthened my connection to my Iranian roots. Learning the language, traditions, and history in such an engaging community setting helped me appreciate the richness of our culture beyond what I experienced at home. It also allowed me to communicate more meaningfully with my extended family, especially older relatives, and to understand the values that shaped them. ISSD gave me a sense of cultural pride that I continue to carry into my personal and professional life.
What are your current endeavors in terms of career, family life, and volunteering?
I’m currently working as a pulmonary and critical care doctor, focusing on providing compassionate care to patients and their families during some of their most vulnerable moments. Outside of medicine, I try to maintain balance through creative outlets like swimming and ice skating. I also enjoy spending quality time with my family and friends when I can!
What are your aspirations for the future of ISSD, and what advice would you offer to families with children at ISSD or considering enrollment in the future?
My hope for ISSD is that it continues to grow as a vibrant space where new generations of Iranian Americans can stay connected to their heritage while embracing life in a multicultural society. My advice to families would be to cherish the experience—encourage your children to participate fully, from language classes to cultural performances and community events. The lessons learned at ISSD go far beyond academics; they shape identity, confidence, and a lifelong sense of belonging.
Anything else you want to add?
I’m deeply grateful for the friendships and mentors I found through ISSD. The school planted the seeds of cultural appreciation, curiosity, and creativity that have shaped so much of who I am today. It’s a place where culture, community, and education come together beautifully—and I hope it continues to inspire others the way it inspired me.
